What is This Loop? |
|
I came across a loop with no name or suggested use.
Is it a familiar loop in the tree-climbing world?
Learning a lot from the forum.

Agreed ... good call Mike! ABOK 1142 - Jug Sling or Jar Sling Knot (page 208). The OP picture is deceptive because the bottle goes through the center of the knot and there should be two loops forming two "handles":

Mike,
Thanks. It was right there in The Ashley Book of Knots at #1142.
The early steps looked so convoluted that I hadn't even looked at the end result.
There may be a reason for tyng it that way, but I'd rather lay it out as shown by the red portion of rope,
and finish by reeving the end along the path shown by the green portion. Now that I know what it is,
I'd have a longer end than that shown.
I also found it in another book, but it was tied wrong and I didn't recognize it.
Thanks again. The prize for being the first to solve is a cast-iron carabiner.

Jack,
You and I must have been typing at the same time.
I can't afford a second prize.

I'd settle for a picture of a "cast-iron carabiner."

Up-to-date Blue Ridge technology.
Somewhat slow, but strong.

Waaa! It's not a locker! But then again maybe it's more of a screw link.
I've been waiting for a steam punk/retro tree climbing community to emerge, the cast iron biner is a first step. Next we need climbers on 1" hemp/manila rope. No harness of course, rope is cinched around the waist! It will take days to haul all the cast iron climbing tools to a tree but it will be worth it!

I can vouch for the strength of the bottle sling. Using 9/16 inch webbing, I've had it installed for a couple of years on 6.5 gallon carboy.

Everyone might as well draw lots now to see who'll be first to bean J~Bird with it.
J, how long do you have this "target" assignment? Any chance you can re-negotiate the contract?
Any new climbers want to take on the "assignment" for a few months? J has paid his dues several times over. Just because he has the nice kevlar helmet doesn't mean target for life! How about a little fairness here!

Moss old man, you're messing with tradition. "Dropping stiff on J-Bird" is a time honored ritual that MUST be respected. Some things just go together like "Mom & Apple Pie" or "Alice Lou and Grits". They even hold "Drop Stuff on J-Bird Festivals" as evidenced here in Canopy Chatter. Besides, it's not like some crazy person is going to haul an anvil 300 miles to a Climb just so they can drop it on J-Bird. ( Hey, it's a throw weight! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
