River/City Climb |
|
Hiking along the river, I saw this tree up on a ridge that I thought might be interesting. In late March of this year, Rob and I decided to check it out. It was a short hike up a forty five degree slope from the river. The tree did not look as impressive as it did from down below, and I thought it might be a little on the short side. I said to Rob that this will be a quick climb and then we can go look for something better. I started clearing out the various vines climbing up the tree, afterwhich Rob and I threw lines numerous times into the tree, only to get our lines rejected as we tried to isolate them (some much for the quick climb). After a far amount of frustration, we both got lines in the tree and proceeded to climb. What we thought was an umimpressive tree, turned out to be a tree with a fantastic 270 degree view that not only included the rive below but also a view on downtown Atlanta.

Fantastic find fellows!!! I'm so glad to see that you guys are out there exploring.
Sometimes its all about the trees. Other times its all about location, location, location.
It reminds me of the somewhat unimpressive tree Joe and I climbed on the rim of little river canyon near Fort Payne ,AL. We only climbed to about 60' but it felt like we were 700' in the air.

only 60'? Child's play!
The highest I've ever climbed was 65' (we measured) and it felt HIGH. Those views are tremendous. Those catkins look like an allergy party. I count my blessings that I am among the unaffected few.

That is a FANTASTIC View!
Maybe we can get togather and climb down your way sometime.
P.S. It sounds like this tree would be a good candidate for using a ground level tie off and an SRT entry.

Jeff - come on down any weekend; the trees aren't the biggest but they can be fun.
J-Bird - Rob always brings his milk and cookies but he must of missed the ''sharing" lesson during his kindergarten classes.
