Sorry Glenn, no trickery and the knot not tied off video (i.e. I don't have a knot hidden in my right hand - I'm just holding one end and the middle). It's much more fun to pull off in person, though. I hope the video does it justice.

Start with a loosely tied slip knot, put the tail around the pole, put the tail in slip knot, pull the works tight.

Did I get it right?

:P

Post More Quick Ties
Bravo.

I had a buffering problem with the video, so I didn't get to study it much. It illustrates a key principle in efficient knot tying: how you grab the rope and execute the first step makes knot tying efficient.

Bob Wray teaches a specific grab for the Blakes Hitch. Though it creates efficiency, it makes the technique more reliable, minimizing errors:

Here's a quick Prusik that I posted on Youtube:

Here's the bowline made from a slip knot:

I'm thinking that the quick bowline shown would need that slip knot intermediate - as Nick mentioned.

Cecil Hemp showed quick tie version of the constrictor hitch that's notable. It involves a loop, held in the air, collapsed down to a fig-8, folded at the intersection, and drawn tight. I'll put it on my to-be-illustrated list.

Quick tie methods are invaluable, because it develops consistency.

Nick and Jim are correct, I did create a slip knot and pass the end through. However, the slipknot is formed when reaching for the post - It is not pre-tied.
Here's a video of the slip-knot method

Jim,
Thanks for chiming in. I was waiting for you... ;)

As you mentioned and can see in the video, it's all about the set-up. Just earlier today I was insisting that a friend try tying the Blake's with the same grip you had pictured in the photo series. He tried repeatedly before that but each time it was a different final knot. The grip made it happen for him.

The quick-tie prusik and the quick-tie bowline are hardly ever how I tie these knots - usually the prusik is on a fixed line, and the bowline is not around a ridged object like the post in the video. However, being able to tie knots different ways (and in a quick-tie variation) helps me to understand the dynamic of the knot and the different elements of it.

Funny you mention the constrictor hitch, I shot and edited one a week ago (not on a bight though). And here's it on a bight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9masqHVJvc

Oak,

Those are the steps for the constrictor. Cecil Hemp has a different dynamic. It's the same though.
