 The joy of splicing
I rarely turn on my TV. It's not that I have anything against TV watching. I get bored and need somthing to pass the time just like everybody else. One thing I really have fun doing when I have some time to kill is splicing. I love taking a piece of cord and turning it into something more than just a piece of cord. I just spent the last couple of hours turning these out. Attachment:

I suppose I'll have a pretty good time using them too. I gave the ones I was climbing with to Florida Cracker and it has forced me to use my 11mm Bandit instead of the 10mm EZ Bend that I prefer climbing with. Anybody else enjoy splicing just for the fun of it?

Now see, if you had done those splices in a tree, you could have claimed subjective joy! Great job! Boy those look good, errr, make that great!

 Re: The joy of splicing
Just curious, what are they?
I love splicing just for the fun of it. I can't tell you how much stuff I have made just to, use once and then decide I should have made it slightly different. I currently have 4 variations of friction savers and they all basicly do the same thing. And that's not even mentioning the last 4 that I had and decided to change them..... Slightly.
Tenex and 3 strand are most wasted ropes for me because of how easy they are to splice and how cheap they are.

Those are lookin' good. I need to be splicing DrainHook's new split tails instead of posting on the Board... 20.5 in eye2eye.

 Re: The joy of splicing
I've thoroughly enjoyed using those split tails. The splicing bug has just started to bite a little bit. I'd say it's a good thing I didn't hang around Nick too much at the Rendezvous, because if I did, I would probably be trying to splice everything.

Wow, I guess those are split-tails. How long are they? They look super short.

 Re: The joy of splicing
I really like the webbing covers on the eyes, I never liked the "bare core" spliced eye style for Beeline. All subjective of course, but I'd rather the webbing cover wearing than the core each time I install and climb on the split tail.
My biggest complaint with spliced eye split tails vs. tied eyes is they eventually loosen up and move too much on the carabiner, it looks like the clear shrink tubing could be reinstalled periodically to tighten the eye up, maybe... a few wraps of vinyl tape just above the eye would do it too. -AJ

Oh ya, I'm sure I'll get into the subjective joy of splicing sooner or later... -AJ

The longest ones are 38" eye to eye. the shortest ones are 20" eye to eye. Those are actual measurements, not subjective ones. Moss. I have never had a problem with these loosening up. I have actually been cosidering using knoted ones like you do though. I like the fact that they have adjustable length. Have you had any problems with core creep?

 Re: The joy of splicing
I have recently (past year or so) started to enjoy the art of splicing. I mostly splice 12 strand hollow braids and 3 strand. double braids are my next project.
favorite cordage to splice poll?
mine is ICE by sampson.

Only when I first started tying them. Realized that the knot has to be set hard before first use, core never has slipped on me since. It's very easy to check if the core is where it should be by squeezing the tail of each knotted eye. Like I said, once the knot is securely set the core doesn't move. It pays to leave the tail on the knot a little longer than you think it should be, the overall tail (core and cover) always seems to loose a quarter inch or so in length after a few climbs. -AJ

I don't like to tie and retie the eyes on Beeline multiple times, once the knot is settled in it seems like the core fibers in the eye might suffer damage if they're straightened out then tightened down hard again several times. Don't know if that's actually true but intuition says leave it be once the eyes are tied. I carry a couple different length split tails on my harness for different rope diameters. Any of them can work in a pinch on any rope but I've got lengths dialed in for optimal performance on 10mm HTP and Tachyon. -AJ
