My first suggestion is, have you tried a G21 SF! I love mine!

Oh, Welcome to Canopy Chatter.

LOVE the 21SF........but not enough to give up my G19 :)

Welcome to the site man.

Glad to see there's some gun guys on here too. If any of Y'all need any Kydex goodies shoot me a PM. When I'm not climbing trees or rigging arenas I'm in the shop making holsters.

the throw weight that was stuck in the tree fell out on its own!

Welcome to good tree karma! On several occasions I have walked away from a hung throwbag only to turn around and see it come down on it's own. One of those nice things that happens once in a while.

Here's a pictorial for single foot lock. It works the best with the weight of the rope underneath. Starting out, you have to use a hand to give aid to the locking process.

Just a random observation here. I'm inclined to take a 200' throwline and cut it 50' and 150'. Canopy advancing will make frequent use of the 50'. Ground throws are more inclined to use 150' (75' up and 75' down or 60' up and 60' feet down if you're me).

I like cardboard friction savers. Engineers formulate cardboard to be abrasion resistant, so use it!

Thanks for the description of the footlock.
I've been trying to use that method for a while and believe i'm not going high enough yet for the weight to self-advance the loop. Because of this non-advancing, I've been using a prusik'd footloop with much success.

Thanks for the tip on cutting down the throwline into 2 separate pieces. When I actually get to the point where i feel comfortable making a TIP transition in the tree, I'll take your advice and give it a shot.

Would you recommend cutting my climbing line into two shorted ones as well or just keep it 150'? Reading other forums (arboristsite), it looks like a lot of people will work off of a much shorter rope. I don't foresee myself going too high for quite some time (still fine tuning my climbing hitch...)

The cardboard ropesaver works like a charm. I hooked a crotch at ~30 feet yesterday (with the throw weight that karma gave back ;) ) on my third throw and promptly got my ropesaver into place. At first I had some difficulty putting it around the limb, but it worked out nicely after a lil playing around.

G19, Is that a homemade cambium saver/ friction saver? If so, please enlighten us to what materials it is made of and how well it works.

As for chopping your 150' rope into small hanks.....Don't do. Try looking at WesSupr's clearance rope section for a short hank if you need one. You can often find just the length you need for a discounted price. I believe every climber should have (1) 200' rope, (1) 150' rope, (1) 120' rope, (1) 60' rope/lanyard, and (1) 30' rope/lanyard. The 120' is my everyday rope, perfect size for 95% of climbs in our area.

I originally was going to make one following this plan. At the time, I did not have any of the soft drink/beer cardboard. So i decided to just do it nice and quick. Took a piece of cardboard (regular old cardboard), Made a tube and taped it 3 times to just hold a straight form. Then I curved it and duck-taped the curve so that it would hold its desired shape. After a few strips on the curve part, i did a quick duck-tape wrap and its done! No time waiting for it to 'cure', no smells... nada.. Took virtually 5-6 mins to make... from cardboard and duck-tape... I've already climbed on it ~10 times and it shows NO sign of degradation yet...

About the rope sizes, i was thinking about splitting my rope into 2 pieces, a 120' and a 30'. I seriously doubt i'm going to go higher up that 60' at the moment on my first TIP AND it will allow me to have a short lanyard if necessary (never know what you're going to need until you don't have it). Right now i have been planning on using the 'Third Rope' method as a temp-tie-in during a transition, but haven't actually done anything of the sort yet.

I definitely won't be chopping up anything until i get more versed in climbing...

thanks for reminding me about wes spur's clearance rope section... so many websites that I normally forget to check out the main ones...

How can you even THINK about cutting a rope????? It makes me cry to even think about cutting a rope. We might have to report you to PETR (People for the Ethical Treatment of Rope)! :D

As for not using those beer cartons for your rope sleeves...think about it. This gives you a great excuse to go buy a case of beer and you can have a cool one while you're shaping and taping! :D

Only joking!

I would seriously consider buying a second shorter rope and keep the one-fifty in one piece. You never know when you might want to take someone else for a climb and then you need the second rope. And...one of these days you will find yourself going higher and then you will be glad you kept it in one piece.

As for the beer carton rope sleeves, JimK came up with a good one there. I have it on good authority from "informed sources" that the idea occurred to him as he was having a cool one and looking for some place to throw away the empty carton. It was his idea of recycling.

HAH PETR, i like it.

I won't be cutting anything as of right now. I will probably be buying another line shortly anyways as the misses is seriously starting to get interested (and she'd be WAYYYYY to small to fit in my XL harness...) :)

Oh don't get me wrong... i have the brews (and enjoy them more often than I'd like to admit...) just didn't have any of the cartons...

My type of recycling ;)
