 A Snowy Climb in Georgia
Yes!!! you read right!! I met Bill this morning at Galactic HQ and we headed off to Possum Top. As we were going up the mountain approaching Suches, a small hole in the wall mountain town, (Look for it next to Hockalooge, GA on the Map), we were greeted with a beautiful dusting of snow on the trees, ground and road. The further up the mountain we got, the more snow we found, nothing ever more than 1 inch, but it was snow in Georgia. After a little more driving, we made it to the trail head and headed on down the trail. I was first admiring a hemlock right off the trail, but continued on down the trail. After admiring several trees, we ran across the Blackberry Poplar. I decided to venture of a little more and found "Constipation" After a few shots with the sidewinder and a ground tie, I headed up. Neither us had a watch and wanted to make sure that we got out before dark so Bill elected to just keep guard of the tree from squirrels while I was climbing. I got up to my tip and then headed back down. We headed off and had a wonderful time.

Turned out that it wasn't as late as we thought -- just one of those days with dark. low clouds that kept the forest in perpetual twilight. The trees at Possum Top, though, were as awesome as ever and some of the hemlocks (the wooly adelgid hasn't reached this spot, yet) looked like they could easily reach 130-145 feet in height. Despite the quick climb, , the formerly Fat Boy Rogue got to have fun by splashing his Jeep Cherokee down 10 miles or so of muddy, bumpy one-lane dirt forest service roads. Then we headed back to Galactic Headquarters for a couple of those malted adult beverages that tree climbers seem to like. (Reminder to self -- keep the wool socks handy when headed into snow country, even snow country in the normally balmy southern Appalachians!)
