 Extra throwline
How much extra throw line do you like to have with you? When climbing it is nice to have a line mug with extra throw line in it to get a higher drt setting once you are in the tree. How much is the right amount (in your experience)?

 Re: Extra throwline
i carry 1 throw bag and about 40 foot of line. Better to have something that can reach the ground then reach for the sky.

 Re: Extra throwline
I guess it depends for me. When Hunabku and I were doing a lot of wilderness climbing, we each carried a spool of 180 feet of Zing-It in a pouch. The line could double for setting lines from the ground and as a pull down from the final TIP.
We never needed anywhere near the 180 feet for a pull down, 99' was the highest we could find to climb, but we had the line; it fit the spool, and did double duty.
In addition to that, we carried about 40 or so feet for advancing to the next TIP.
When we started down, we'd tie one end of the spooled line to the pull-down point, leave the line on the spool in the pouch, and descend. The spool rotated freely in the pouch and was clean as a whistle.

 Re: Extra throwline
I carry 150' Zing-It in a small pouch permanently attached to my harness. Mini biner is nested in the top of the pouch holding a 6 and an 8 oz throwbag. Need the 150' to set traverses with the Dangle method. Also useful as a general backup throwline. Most of the time using much less of it but it doesn't weigh anything. -AJ

For advancing DRT 60' of line is a good amount. I like a lighter bag when throwing in the tree, 8 oz is a about perfect for me. -AJ

 Re: Extra throwline
I used to carry 60' of target line in the tree. I chose this low end line as my "in tree" line, due to it's resistance to tangles of the nasty sort (who wants to deal with a zingit tangle while in the tree?). I now carry 150' of it for long lateral throws to retrieve with the grapnel. I have 100' of black line in my tiny grapnel pouch (gymnastics chalk bag - $3). I find it helps to use different colored lines to keep things tidy, and I need all of the line management help that i can get! I carry an 8oz, and a 16oz bag in the tree. The 16oz, I just snap to the end of my rope in lieu of a monkey's fist.

 Re: Extra throwline
I take about 40-50' of 1.75mm Zing-it with me up into the tree on a old chalk line reel, this helps to keep tangles to a minimum and best of all you don't have to flake your throwline in a bag or pouch every time you use it. I have been looking to upgrade to an auto rewind fly fishing reel that some other climbers use.
I've tried a chalk pouch with throwline but just don't have the patience to deal with the tangles and constant flaking. I highly recommend some type of reel type storage system, it adds a little weight to your saddle but saves a ton of time.
For my big shot I use a folding cube with 1.75mm Fling it. For hand throwing I also use a folding cube and target line. All throwlines are used with homemade throwbags.
