Post Re: SMC Ring on pear link
Moray,

Would you be interested in testing an 18 year old dynamic rope to see how the strength has held up? I can send you a a piece for testing. I am just curious. It was bought at REI by a rock climber. It has only been used less than 20 times. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks

BKS

BKS, sure! It might be spring before I get to it as my pulling rig is outside half-buried in snow. The stretchiness of the rope, probably 30% or so at break, would make this a close call. I have 2 feet of piston available, so the rope has to run out of stretch before the piston pulls home. With careful wrapping around the bollards and minimal rope between the bollards it would probably work out. About 10 feet of rope should do it.

Any info on the original rated strength of the rope?

UPDATE: I have been climbing with the SMC ring on my Pear link for a few months now. last night I was going over my gear and inspected the ring. The paint has worn off on the inside edges and while running my finger around the inside of the ring I found a small burr. I tie into the ring with a biner so there is no chance of the burr comming in contact with rope however it un-nerved be enough to switch it out for a small steel ring.

I have a soft connector from my SMC ring to the steel pear link, do you need to have the ring right on the pear

The other option to solve the original fair lead problem is put a swivel on the pear.

Moss,

I clip my hitch into the ring and having it directly on the pear link keeps it close at hand and in the orientation that I like. I don't have a swivel but it may be an option. I think the issue will be solved with a steel ring, ill just have to deal with the extra weight.

Haha, my stock answer, clip your hitch biner into your leg strap soft D on your Tengu or Yellowjacket ;-)
