Post Cyber Monday Blues
So I decide I "have to have" a 9mm rope. I used to only want one until I found out I could get it in Olive Drab.

What better day to order one than on Cyber Monday?

Well I've tried several times to get onto On Rope 1's website and it is apparently down.

HOW CAN THIS BE HAPPENING????

I guess all of the climbers trying to get on the site all at once on Cyber Monday is more than Bruce's TRS80 server can handle.

SHEESH!!!!

Anybody alse plan on taking advantage of all the online deals for climbing gear today?

Whatcha gonna getcha???

Have you compared the weight of 9mm HTP vs 9mm EZ Bend?

I'm getting some 9mm to lighten my pack. I think the HTP would make it heavier.

I do love the low stretch of HTP, but not at the cost of a heavier pack.

Hmmm, it's still down - or overloaded.

So you have a size picked out, a color - olive drab, a good choice I might add, now if you can just decide on the length  .

Of course length may be pre-decided for you based on factory available lengths.

9mm HTP = 4.2lbs per 100'

9mm EZBend = 3.5lbs per 100'

Well, I wasn't, then you had to go and post about PMI 9mm olive drab rope. Now you've got me thinking about some in black! Hmmm!

OTOH, if we could get 300' cheaper than two 150', we could save some bucks, cut the 300' in half, or so, and you would have an excuse to come to Ooltewah to get your half of the rope!!!

And that reminds me, I want some infrared pan and tilt security cameras.

i have found the 9mm ezbend strands to pick very easily which scares me with this diameter line. I like the tight weave of the HTP much better for performance as well. I also found the 9mm HTP to be a hair fatter then the 9mm EZbend (which I personally like better). Again all my opinion. I know you love the EZbend Ron (im not saying its a bad line I just like the HTP better), defend away. disclaimer: (i've never climbed 9mm HTP, just handled it)

When i climbed 9mm EZbend then 10mm HTP side by side. hands down the 10mm HTP was much nicer to climb on. but the 10mm HTP wont meet your weight criteria.

IMO, I'd rather suffer on the hike with my 10mm HTP then suffer on the climb with less of a rope (just my opinion)

I've used PMI for all kinds of stuff. Drug it under load across limbs, used it for lanyards, etc. It is tough, tough, rope. My experience is just the opposite; I find EzBend much tougher and HTP more delicate about snagging and picking. It seems to have a softer cover which picks a little quicker. EzBend was designed for rock and caving; it would be difficult to believe HTP could match the durability of EzBend.

There is a noticable difference in PMI 10 mm and PMI 9mm as far as climbing goes too. But if we compare 10mm PMI to 10mm HTP, I'd take the EzBend - and I have both. I used to climb on 10mm HTP until I re-discovered 10mm EzBend. Haven't climbed on my HTP since.

I now climb exclusively, and have for quite a while, on EzBend, 9mm, 10mm, and 11mm. I can't imagine anything climbing better. HTP has less stretch, but unless you're doing a really long climb it's hard to tell the difference. OTOH, EzBend will feed through hardware from the very first stroke with the tail not even reaching the ground.

Since cavers typically make loooong descents, it is curious that they choose 10 - 11 mm EzBend or Pit rope over HTP.

I can understand one could like HTP better, but claiming superiority is gonna be a hard sell.

Are you two going to buy anything or not? This is Cyber Monday for crying out loud.

I have used both HTP and EZ Bend quite a bit too. I wouldn’t call either of them superior to the other completely.

In my experience EZ Bend has greater wear resistance, is lighter, and has more stretch.

HTP has a smoother jacket. It has a 24 strand cover vs EZ Bends 16 strand. The thinner strands in the 24 strand cover actually have a better chance of being worn through completely than the thicker strands in a 16 strand cover.

HTP is the king of low stretch. That can be a good thing at times like when you are climbing, and a bad thing at times like when you are descending and experience a sudden stop.

I have had 10mm HTP nearly snatch my back out of whack on a sudden stop while rappelling.

They are both good ropes and each individual is going to have a favorite based on the criteria that are important to them.

If you were paying attention to my earlier response it should be obvious that weight and packability are my main criteria for my next rope purchase.

Given that knowledge the PMI has the advantage for what I am looking for.

But I already knew that!!! I wasn’t looking for advice on what rope to buy!!!

I was trying to see if anybody else was going to buy anything on CYBER MONDAY!!! So are yall gonna buy anything or not???

P.S. Ron I think you are onto somthing. We should just go ahead and get 600'. Then I could have a 200' and a 100' and you could have 300' to stretch from the pine tree in the backyard to the pine tree in the front yard.

Next big climber get together, there has to be a softball game or tree climber equivalent sport between the HTP and the EZ-bend fanatics! You know which team I'll be on ;-)

No gear purchases today, my next tree gear purchase will probably be sometime in 2012 or whenever the midline attachable Kevin Bingham Rope Wrench comes out.

I had exactly that experience on my 10 mm HTP when a auto-block caught on a rappel - that was on that Citigo (?) climb. That's what changed my mind about very low stretch rope.

I agree.

Gonna be hard to beat PMI 9mm for those.

Wow! Think of the money we'd save! We can't hardly afford not to do that!!! :? Hmmm, 9mm might be below even my chicken curve in that application  .

I still think about that long stretch myself. We'd have to back-tie the anchors, but so what! I'm ready to do it!!!

Absolutely.

And, there are many, many more that don't. Not knocking HTP here, just pointing out HTP is not the choice of the majority.

Hey, don't worry about that - we're were baited into this. It's not our fault.
