Post Tom's "Ed Viesturs" interview link
Tom posted this on TreeBuzz, it's very applicable to the rec climbing sphere:

Just substitute the word "tree" every time the word "mountain" appears.

There's more wisdom in this interview than grits in a Waffle House.

Some choice quotes:

"When you're less experienced, you don't even know about the mistakes you're making."

"...And I'd always thought, it doesn't matter how long you've been there, how much money you've spent, how much energy you've expended. If the situation isn't good, go down. The mountain's [tree] always going to be there. You can always go back. "

"Yeah, but a mistake is a mistake even if you get away with it."

I also like this take on guided climbing:

Quote:
When I meet a group of clients before a climb, I say, "Here's the deal: It doesn't matter how much money you've paid to climb this mountain. I will make all the decisions. I'll let you know how I'm making them and why I'm making them, but in the end, you are hiring me to make the decisions, because I have the experience to do so."

It's a bit less extreme, but that's sometimes how I feel about guided tree climbs or challenge course/teambuilding facilitation. Of course, this still requires feedback from the clients about how they're feeling, but ultimately the power of decision must be with the guide.
