That is steep -unless air fair is included (yeah right). How many here have actually been through this course?

Go work for a reputable Arborist somewhere. Get paid for learning how to climb. Just tell them up front what you want out of your time.

First try pricing 7 days with local transportation, food and lodging with a guide in the Amazon (without tree climbing instruction). Now add tree climbing instruction with Tim Kovar one of the great instructors (no offense intended to the other awesome instructors kicking around Galactic Headquarters and elsewhere), and you have a bargain. It is expensive just thinking of getting that money together but once you add it all up... enuf said.

And I would be remiss in not mentioning Bill and Joe Maher's annual Panama adventure. Several options for getting yourself up into some fine tropical forest trees.

Post Learning TC in Brazil
My point was that IF you are in the States AND You want to learn to Climb Trees you DO NOT need to travel to the Amazon River to learn.

(By the way no Airfare is included you need to show up at Manaos to start your jungle adventure)

Now, if You want to Take a Vacation for 7 days in the jungle that includes Basic Tree Climbing instruction them be my guess and go for it.

When you read the web site site it kind of gives that impression that the cost is mostly associated with the Teaching of Tree Climbing.

Is kind of like me saying that in order to learn Tree Climbing in the States you have to travel to California and climb a Sequoia tree. You can learn basic TC in almost any short tree in my back yard.

Yes, it cost a lot to take an expedition to the middle of the Amazon jungle.

I'm very literal minded Desi, I read the course name "Basic Tropical Tree Climbing Course" and assumed you had an issue with the cost of that course. Come to think of it, next winter I'll offer a tropical tree climbing course up north at a third of the cost! Maybe I can get some rubber snakes to hang in the trees and some fake potted plants tied to branches to make it more convincing! Nah, the students will see right through it, they'll realize they're not in the tropics when the sleet whips their faces and their toes freeze solid :-)

Agreed, you can take a tree climbing course in the states for much less.

Tengu's got a grand adventure going there, but Oldtimer's right -- that's way too much to spend for training. However, I might be willing to spend that much for an Amazon adventure with experienced climbers that was maybe a week or so longer.

I’m guessing the whole seven-day Amazon trip would cost about $3,000 with airfare.

I climbed in four different locations in Panama from this past January 3 to February 5 for just under $2,100, including roundtrip airfare from Atlanta and all my food and lodging and in-country transportation.

Hi Desi,
Just a note in defense of the cost of Tim's tropical tree climbing class. I do think you spoke too harshly on the Coalition board. $1700 for 7 days in the Amazon is NOTHING compared to what some people spend to go to Costa Rica to lie around in the sun all day. Food, lodging, equipment, Tim's instruction... and you cannot learn to climb tropiocal trees in the North American (U.S.) temperate forest! I'd really like to see you post a retraction or something that counters all the bashing that goes on about the cost of tree climbing instruction. Some of us make (or don't, as the case may be) our living this way, and it's VERY labor intensive and hard work.
Thanks.
Your friend as always,
Patty

I think that I was not harsh or malicious in any way and the post probably allowed more potential Tree Climbing students to see the post and follow the link than it would had been otherwise. I think Tim can speak for himself and post a rebuttal if he thinks there is anything wrong with our silly commentary on his upcoming class. That is the nice thing about this Tree Climbers Coalition Board anyone has an opinion and all opinions are welcomed even from those we do not agree with.
Tim, I personally wish you a great success in your class! I have always admired your dedication to Tree Climbing Education.

I don't think you were harsh or malicious at all, either, and you have every right to speak your mind.

As for the comment about "all the bashing that goes on about the cost of tree climbing instruction", I have no idea what Patty is talking about.

Yeah, "harsh and malicious" is quite a stretch. I guess any criticism would have been perceived as such. Honestly I find it amusing that you got scolded behind the scenes, third party, for giving an opinion. Thanks for sharing that.

I don't think Tim's class is a bad deal. You gotta pay to play. Surely it will fit someones taste and budget. A "tropical" btcc should be quite different than a plain old btcc. I must assume that both SRT and DRT are going to be taught. Tim no doubt will put on a great class!

Patty is way off about laying around on the beach in Costa Rica though. Just Google "all inclusive Costa Rica vacation" and you find lots of stuff like this...

http://www.caravan.com/tour/costa-rica? ... 2goduy1kMg

All inclusive with lots of activities, and you get transported all over the country for 10 days - $995
