It's amazing what you can discover at 3 a.m., when you sit down in front of the computer because you can't sleep.

New Zealand researchers have found that trees are beginning to grow in mountain places where there previously were no trees. They blame global warming for moving the treeline up higher in some areas around the world; measured at 166 sites where the average temperature has increased 0.013 degrees Celcius a year over the past 25 years. The treeline moved up at 87 sites, remained stable at 77 sites and retreated at only two sites.

British researchers are using thermal imaging cameras to quickly determine the health of individual trees and whole groves. It seems that heat will move evenly through healthy tree tissue, but the camera will show fairly abrupt color changes where the tissue is beginning to rot or where there are hollow spots. The downside is that the cameras typically cost about $21,000 and up, and the computer software is another $2,000 or so. I'll have to ask Abe for a raise before getting one of these...!
