Regarding Ron's statement of two different TIP's
Quote: When I climb, I have a personal rule to always be tied in twice and if possible/practical on two different TIPs I wanted to start a separate thread off Ron's statement rather than get the thread off topic. Could you expand on this a bit? And does anyone else here practice it? I just recently set two lines in a tree. I went up one line with a RAD. On the second line, I advanced an ascender using the same hand that I pushed up the RAD ascender. When I came back down, I hooked up a rack and it and the Gri-Gri fed side by side. The descent was really smooth. But Ron might have something totally different in mind?

In other words no, I do not as a rule always climb on 2 TIPs. I can be tied in twice in many different situations in a tree but never on initial ascent. -AJ

I concur with Moss. FWIW, I am still a fairly new climber (2 years of DRT) but the only time I have a back-up line on ascent is when I am trying a new technique in my own backyard. I have become very confident in my DRT system and the back-up I use when climbing DRT is to have an autoblock set for my descent. Maybe a little overkill but, it makes me feel safer. BKS

Re: Regarding Ron's statement of two different TIP's
That's not what I meant. I don't carry two ropes and establish two TIPs for each rope. I use one rope, period. I'm tied in to that rope generally two ways on the initial ascent.
As soon as a suitable limb becomes within range of my lanyard, I attach my lanyard. That's now two seperate TIPs.
So now lets say I've climbed above my lanyard TIP, what now? If possible, I tie in to a higher TIP with the other end of the lanyard, before I take the first lanyard loose. What happens when I reach the TIP my rope is on?
I establish a lanyard tie in, hopefully on another limb, but if that's not feasible, I tie into the TIP my rope is on. What about advancing my rope at this point?
I have to load the lanyard, establish a second lanyard tie-in, again, hopefully on a different limb, or around the trunk if feasible. Then I can disconnect from my rope and still be tied in twice. I advance the rope to the next pitch, tie back in to the rope and then remove the lower lanyard and start the ascent all over again to the next pitch.

Well I had a feeling that you had a feeling I didn't mean that Wow that was a quick response moss; you got a computer up in the tree with you, or you nursing that shoulder. Hope it's getting better.

Re: Regarding Ron's statement of two different TIP's
Thanks Ron:
I understand. I do exactly the same thing with my lanyard. I've never been particularly comfortable with heights and feel a bit better when my lanyard is tied in and now I'm on two life supports.
