 The Michoacan Knot
I'm submitting my first survey, so I'm unsure of the pending train wreck. I've been looking at the Michoacan knot, and I'm finding variations. The survey question is asking what version do you recognize as the standard Michoacan? The survey doesn't ask if you use it. Here are some additional illustrations of the Michoacan: http://jimknowsknots.blogspot.com/2012/01/michoacan-knot.htmlHere's what I'm calling the 5-1. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/109141487644939188974/albums/5697860320273435185

 Re: The Michoacan Knot
tough call... I guess I recognize the 5/1 as the standard, but I climb on the 4/1 with a short cord, as to keep my hitch compact. how to answer edit: I see I can pick 2 options

 Re: The Michoacan Knot
Jim, trick question, if a climber doesn't use the hitch then they can't say which is "best". My understanding is that the 4/1 is the baseline, from there each climber adjusts to fit their rope/hitch cord/climbing style by adding coils or tucking up and out after 2 coils (like a Blake's) instead of one. The drawing you show is the backside of the hitch if the climber is building the hitch the same way they would a Blake's, coiling from left to right upward (everyone's a critic) -AJ

even trickier it is, when the poll asks which is "best", and the post asks which is "standard"...

I used this as my source, being old and almost out-of-date it might actually be authoritative on the Michoacan -AJ

 Re: The Michoacan Knot
Moss...is the direction of winding the coil significant to a convention or doesn't it alter the dynamics?....when I climbed on 3 strand rope, it mattered!!!...

Definitely significant, at least relative to the other parts of a hitch. Last climb I watched a new climber tie a Blake's with the coil going the wrong direction, the hitch would not grab. -AJ

If the coil direction is correct in relation to the other parts of the hitch parts it doesn't matter. I can see how it might matter with 3-strand. The only reason I mentioned it is that the Michoacan is based on the Blake's Hitch, might be easier for people to tie the Mich the same way they tie the Blake's. -AJ
