Blakes Hitch Knot

A fantastic alternative to the tautline hitch, The Blake Hitch is another tree climbing knot that can make your life easier.  Awesome grab is created by the bottom turn while the opposite turns create the “drag”. So if you lightly pull down on the top turns you release the drag – allowing you to descend at a reasonable rate.

Advantages (compared to the tautline hitch):

  • much less likely to bind or tighten
  • it will not roll

  • slightly more complicated to tie
    • Always ensure that the tail passes over the bridge and behind the running end of the  line. Failure to do so may result in the suicide slide knot which is as bad as it sounds.
  • Remember – descending rapidly can result in excessive friction on the climbing line
